Extreme close-ups are incredibly popular among horror genre type films due to many things. For starters, these kind of shots make the audience/viewer feel claustrophobic. This kind of feeling is used to produce the feeling of anxiety and further tension.

The reason that many filmmakers use this sort of angle is because it provides an unsettling feeling mainly due to the fact that the image is unbalanced.
